The study for the C-118 was launched during the Second World War with the objective of supplying the U.S. AIR FORCE with a heavy version of the C-54 SKYMASTER. The first prototype took off on its maiden flight on the 15th February 1946. The U.S. AIR FORCE and the U.S. NAVY received 167 C-118 or R-6 D LIFTMASTER.
